Stop Heating the Air: A Better Way to Manage Smart Fab Thermals
If you’re currently planning out a smart Fab, you’ve probably realized that old-school convection heating just doesn’t cut it anymore. When you’re working in a clean room, you need heat that’s fast and precise, but you can’t have it messing with your environment. That’s why shortwave infrared (IR) is the way to go. Instead of wasting time heating up the air around your parts, IR goes straight for the substrate. Speed is everything In a data-driven shop, waiting around for a resistive element to warm up feels like an eternity. Those things can take minutes to ramp up. IR lamps? They hit your target temperature in seconds. It makes your life so much easier. Your PLC can tweak the power in real-time based on what the sensors are seeing. You get a much tighter loop, which means you aren’t worrying about overshooting your temp or—worst case scenario—warping your wafers. Packing a punch in a small space We build these systems to cram a lot of wattage into a tiny footprint. You’re pushing high voltage through a compact quartz tube, which creates some pretty intense radiant flux. The upside is that you can shrink your oven size. But here’s the catch: you have to get your cooling jackets right. If the air around the lamp housing gets too hot, your lamps will burn out early or your connectors will just give up. Trust me, you don’t want to be replacing those mid-shift. Keeping it clean Air turbulence is a nightmare in a clean room. Since IR doesn’t rely on high-velocity forced air, you don’t have to deal with that chaos. We use sealed quartz envelopes, so you don’t have to worry about random particulates flaking off and ruining your process. The trade-off Now, high-output IR isn’t “plug and play.” These systems are picky about their power. A single voltage spike can pop a lamp instantly. You’ll want to spend a little extra on the electrical front-end—think high-precision SCRs or PWM controllers. It’s a bit more work upfront, but it takes the guesswork out of your thermal profiles. You just know it’s working.
