
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters From Becoming a Hazard
Let’s be honest: putting a high-heat electrical appliance in a room full of steam and splashing water is a bit like playing with fire. When you recess an infrared heater into a ceiling, you’re basically creating a little oven in your attic space where heat and moisture love to hang out. If you don’t get the safety side of things right, you’re looking at a short circuit. Here is how we actually handle that. The battle against electricity leaks We don’t take chances with insulation. We use high-temp ceramic insulators at the lamp terminals because they stop the current from jumping onto the metal housing. But the real lifesaver is the grounding. You’ve got to make sure the chassis is bonded to a dedicated ground. Why? Because if a seal fails or a wire frays, you want that fault current hitting the breaker instantly, not waiting for someone to touch the fixture. Also, throw away the standard PVC wiring. It’ll melt. We use heavy-duty silicone-insulated wires because they can handle the constant heating and cooling without turning into goo. Stopping the steam Water vapor is sneaky. It finds every tiny gap. To stop steam from ruining the wiring junctions, we seal the housing with high-temp gaskets. The lamp usually sits in a quartz sleeve—which is great for heat—but the connection points are where things usually go wrong. We use sealed connectors there so moisture can’t bridge the gap between the live lead and the casing. Don’t choke the heat Here’s the thing about high-wattage lamps: they get incredibly hot. If you cram the recessed box too tightly, the air inside your ceiling starts to bake. Over time, that heat eats away at your building’s wiring insulation. It’s a slow burn, but it’s dangerous. Give the unit some breathing room. Use a vented housing or just leave some clearance for airflow. Otherwise, your wires might burn out even if the lamp itself is rated for the temperature. And one last tip: check your IP rating. If it’s going in a bathroom, look for IPX4. It’s the bare minimum to make sure a few splashes don’t fry your electronics.
