
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (And Dry)
Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam, splashes, and constant humidity. In a place like that, a tiny leak in your electrical insulation isn’t just a technical glitch—it’s a genuine safety hazard. To keep things safe, we focus on two spots: the lamp itself and where the wires connect.
Dealing with the Damp
We use high-purity quartz glass for the heating element. It’s great because it doesn’t crack when it heats up and cools down quickly, and it naturally blocks electricity. But here’s the catch: surface tracking. When steam turns back into water on the glass, it can actually create a little path for the current to travel. It’s a sneaky problem. To stop this, we use IP-rated housings. The trick is mounting the lamp so condensation just drips away. You don’t want water pooling around your electrical terminals. That’s just asking for trouble.
The Connection Point
This is where most things go wrong. The connection is the weakest link. We use reinforced seals and connectors that hate moisture to keep the wiring bone-dry. If you’re the one doing the wiring, do yourself a favor: use heat-shrink tubing or silicone-sealed glands. A loose connection doesn’t just make the light flicker. In a humid bathroom, it can create an arc that literally burns out the socket. Also, stick with grounded metallic reflectors. If something does go wrong with the insulation, you want the GFCI to trip immediately. It’s much better to have a tripped breaker than a mirror frame that’s suddenly electrified.
The Trade-offs
Those high-wattage shortwave lamps are amazing because they give you instant heat. But they pull a lot of power. And because they get so hot, they can actually melt or degrade cheap plastic gaskets over time. Don’t use the cheap stuff. Go with high-temp silicone or Viton seals. If those gaskets fail, moisture gets into the terminals, your insulation resistance tanks, and you’re back to square one. Just keep a strict grounding schedule and you’ll be fine.
