
Why we obsess over the electrical safety of our IR lamps
When you’re dealing with high heat and high voltage, things can go sideways fast. One tiny insulation leak and suddenly you’ve blown a fuse or tripped the main breaker, bringing your whole operation to a screeching halt. That’s why we don’t play the guessing game. Every single tube that leaves our shop goes through a full HiPot (withstand voltage) and insulation resistance test. No exceptions.
How we actually test them
Here is the deal: we hit the lamp’s electrical parts with a voltage way higher than what you’ll use in day-to-day operation. Why? Because it forces the hidden flaws to show their hand. We’re talking about the stuff you can’t see—microscopic cracks in the quartz or a bit of contamination in the electrode seals. We want those failures to happen in our lab, not inside your machine. If we see the current spike, that tube is trash. Simple as that. We also check the resistance between the powered elements and the grounded chassis. We’re looking for high Mega-ohm values. Basically, we just want to make sure the electricity stays exactly where it belongs: in the filament.
Why “good enough” isn’t good enough
Some shops just sample 5% or 10% of a batch. For high-end gear, that’s a gamble I’m not willing to take. One “lemon” tube can cause an arc flash. That’s not just a technical glitch; it’s a genuine safety risk for your team and a nightmare for your uptime. By testing every single unit, we can sleep better knowing the seals and connectors are solid.
A quick reality check
Now, while our testing makes the lamps safe, it can’t fix a bad installation. You’ve still got to make sure your wiring can handle the heat. If you run these lamps too close to plastic conduits or use wire that’s too thin, the ambient heat will eat through your insulation eventually. It doesn’t matter how perfect the lamp was when it left our factory if the cables are melting. Keep your cable management clear of the heat zone. It’s the best way to make sure the safety margins we build into these tubes actually last.
